About Coastal Garden Supplies

Pascale and Max are two horticultural souls, both coming at growing from different ends of the spectrum.

Pascale specialises in the pruning and nurture of fruiting and flowering species. She brings the gardener's eye: the innate understanding of timing, shape, vigour, flowering, fruiting and the small changes that help a plant move from surviving to thriving. Her approach is practical, observant and rooted in hands-on care.

Max is drawn more towards the growth of resource species, such as vegetables, trees, herbs and medicinal plants. With a scientific background, he is interested in how and why plants grow better in certain conditions: the role of soil structure, biology, minerals, moisture, root development and the wider ecological systems plants sit within.

Both came from different parts of the growing world, but both came to recognise the nuanced and very specific benefits of seaweed compost.

Professional gardeners and farmers across the ages have used seaweed from the shore as a natural resource. It has long been valued not because it is fashionable, but because growers saw what it could do: improving soils, supporting plant health and bringing something from the coast back into the land.

Coastal Garden Supplies builds on that tradition in a more responsible and traceable way. We work with kelp farmers whose farms are not simply producing a crop, but are also helping to take up nutrients from coastal waters and provide structure and habitat for local fish and marine populations.

Our products sit between these two worlds: Pascale's gardener's understanding of what plants need in practice, and Max's scientific interest in why certain natural inputs support better growth.

That is the basis of Coastal Garden Supplies: practical gardening knowledge, ecological thinking and coastal resources brought together for people who want healthier soil, stronger plants and a more thoughtful way to grow.

A little bit about how this works

Seaweed compost is not a magic fertiliser. It works because it brings together organic matter, minerals and natural seaweed-derived compounds that support the conditions plants need to grow well.

Good plant growth starts in the soil. Roots need structure, air, moisture, biology and access to nutrients. Compost helps improve the physical condition of the soil by opening up heavier ground, helping lighter soils hold moisture, and feeding the living organisms that support long-term soil health.

Seaweed adds another layer.

For generations, gardeners and farmers have used seaweed because it contains a broad range of trace minerals and natural compounds produced by marine plants growing in challenging coastal conditions. More recently, scientific studies into seaweed extracts and seaweed-derived biostimulants have shown that they can support plant growth, root development, crop quality and plant resilience under certain conditions.

The key thing is that this is not about forcing plants to grow in an artificial way. Seaweed-based inputs appear to work by supporting the systems around growth: root development, microbial activity, nutrient uptake, moisture stress response and the way plants cope with environmental pressure.

From a scientific perspective, the important part is not to think of seaweed compost as something that simply “pushes” growth. It is better understood as a way of improving the growing environment around the plant.

A healthier soil environment can support better root development, better moisture retention, more active soil biology and improved nutrient availability. When those foundations are stronger, plants are usually better able to access what they need.

That is why Coastal Compost should be positioned as a soil improver first. It is designed to help create better growing conditions, rather than act as a short-term quick fix.

Results will always depend on soil condition, plant type, watering, season, use rate and overall plant care. But used properly, seaweed compost can be a useful part of creating healthier, more resilient growing conditions.

It is especially useful for raised beds, vegetable growing, fruit trees, herbs, border planting, mulching, soil restoration and new garden projects where the aim is not just fast growth, but stronger plants and healthier soil over time.

What this means in the garden

In the garden, the difference often starts with the soil itself.

Good compost changes the way soil feels and behaves. Heavy soil becomes easier to work. Dry or tired soil holds moisture better. New planting areas feel richer, softer and more forgiving. For a gardener, those details matter because they affect how well plants settle in after planting.

Seaweed compost is useful because it gives plants a better foundation at the point where they need it most: when they are establishing roots, recovering from pruning, being moved, or being asked to flower, fruit or put on strong seasonal growth.

For fruiting and flowering plants, that foundation is especially important. A plant under stress may still survive, but it is less likely to perform well. It may flower poorly, drop fruit, struggle after dry weather, or fail to put on the kind of healthy, balanced growth you want to see.

Used properly, Coastal Compost can help support stronger establishment after planting, healthier root growth, better moisture holding through dry spells, improved soil texture around existing plants, more resilient borders, beds and containers, and fruiting and flowering plants that are better supported through the season.

It is not about forcing plants. It is about giving them a better place to grow from.

That means it can be used in practical ways: mixed into new beds, added around fruit trees, used when planting shrubs and perennials, worked into raised beds, or applied as a mulch around established plants.

It will not replace good watering, good pruning, good plant choice or the right amount of light. But it can make those things work better, because the plant is starting from healthier ground.

"For me, that is the real value of seaweed compost. It helps create the kind of soil where plants look more settled, recover better and have a stronger chance of becoming what they are meant to be."

Why kelp?

Kelp connects the garden back to the coast in a practical and ecological way. It grows in the sea, taking up nutrients from the water as it develops. When farmed responsibly, kelp can provide a useful crop while also creating structure in the water column and habitat opportunities for marine life.

We do not see seaweed as a gimmick or a marketing ingredient. It is a natural coastal resource with a long history of use in growing, and a modern role in more thoughtful, traceable and lower-impact garden products.

Our aim is to make that resource useful for gardeners again, without relying on removing wild seaweed from the shore and without overcomplicating how people use it.

Our approach

Coastal Garden Supplies is built around practical products for real gardens. Our focus is soil health, root establishment, resilient planting and making better use of natural materials.

We are not trying to sell miracle cures or overstate what compost can do. Good growing still depends on good care, sensible plant choice, watering, light and season.

"Soil is the foundation. Improve the soil, and you improve the chances of everything planted into it."

Our compost and kelp products are for gardeners, growers and landscapers who want to work with natural systems rather than constantly fight against them.

Growing with the coast

Pascale's practical horticultural care, Max's scientific and ecological background, and the long tradition of using seaweed as a natural soil resource all come together in what we make. Small range, careful thinking, coastal roots.

Better soil. Stronger plants. Coastal resources used with care.
