FAQs

Questions, considered.

A few things gardeners often ask about Coastal Compost, the Coastal Kelp Range, delivery and dosage.

Coastal Compost

  • Coastal Compost is our flagship peat-free compost, produced in Cornwall and Devon from composted organic matter blended with coastal inputs and natural trace minerals. It is designed to feed the soil as well as the plant, supporting soil structure, root establishment and microbial life.

  • Yes. Coastal Compost is fully peat-free and free from synthetic fertilisers, made with sustainably sourced coastal and green inputs.

  • Coastal Compost is well suited to raised-bed blends and seasonal top-ups. We do not normally recommend using it as the only material in an entire deep raised bed because it is a concentrated soil improver with a naturally alkaline pH.

  • Four: a 40L bag at £18, a full pallet of 32 × 40L bags (1,280L) at £360, a 600L bulk bag at £85, and a 1,300L loose tipped load at £140. Product prices are fixed. Any applicable delivery charge is calculated from your postcode before payment.

  • 40L bags suit pots, planters and small top-ups. A full pallet of 32 × 40L bags gives 1,280L, our best value per bag, where bagged compost is easier to handle than a loose load. The 600L bulk bag is a contained option where tipping is not possible. The 1,300L loose tipped load is our best value per litre where a vehicle can tip safely.

  • For top-ups, a 3 to 5 cm layer is usually enough. A typical 2m × 1m × 0.3m raised bed holds around 600L. Send us your measurements and we will recommend the most practical format and quantity.

  • Coastal Compost can be mixed into suitable growing media for established large pots and planters. It should not normally be used as a universal standalone potting compost.

  • As a recycled organic product, Coastal Compost can naturally vary slightly in colour, texture and moisture between batches.

  • Yes. We can blend to a brief for specific projects, such as tree pits, wildflower areas, turf preparation or vegetable ground. Get in touch with what you are planting and we will suggest a mix.

Multi-load and larger projects

  • Yes. Each additional load costs less than the one before it: £140 for the first, then £135, £130, £125, and £120 per load from the fifth load onwards. Five loads (6,500 litres) come to £650.

  • Multiple loads can be ordered together, but each approximately 1,300L load normally requires a separate vehicle journey. We will agree the delivery sequence before confirmation.

  • Each loose tipped load is approximately 1,300 litres. There is a calculator on the Coastal Compost page that shows the total and the saving for any number of loads.

Delivery and access

  • We deliver across the south west, from our base at Torpoint on the Cornwall and Devon border, up to 60 miles away. That comfortably covers south-east Cornwall (Saltash, Liskeard, Looe, the Rame Peninsula), Plymouth and parts of west Devon. Orders outside the south west are quoted by enquiry.

  • Delivery is calculated from your postcode before payment. Within 15 miles of Torpoint, delivery is free on every format. Beyond 15 miles, bagged formats (40L bags, the full pallet, and the 600L bulk bag) and individual Coastal Kelp bottles carry a single flat delivery charge of £15 per order. Loose tipped loads instead add 65p per mile for each mile beyond the free 15-mile radius. The Coastal Kelp Collection of three bottles is delivered free regardless of distance. We currently deliver up to 60 miles from Torpoint; further afield, please send us an enquiry.

  • By distance from Torpoint, calculated automatically from the delivery postcode you enter at checkout. You see any applicable delivery charge before you pay.

  • Please allow at least three days' notice for a preferred delivery date. You choose your preferred date during checkout, and this is a preferred date. We will contact you promptly if access, availability or delivery sequencing requires an adjustment.

  • A vehicle needs to reach the tipping point and raise its body safely. Access must be on hardstanding or firm ground, not off road, with no unduly restricted lanes, low branches or overhead cables. Tipped delivery remains subject to suitable access and the driver's final safety assessment.

  • No, not without the correct permissions. Loads cannot be tipped on public land or on someone else's private property unless permission is in place. You confirm you have suitable access and permission when ordering a tipped load.

  • Send us photos or a description of the lane, drive, gates and turning space and we will tell you honestly whether it will work. If it will not, the 600L bulk bag or 40L bags are usually the answer.

Coastal Kelp Range

  • Three kelp-based biostimulants: Coastal Fermented Kelp for watering in new plants and root establishment, Coastal Unfiltered Kelp as a richer seasonal soil drench for established plants, and Coastal Foliar Spray, a filtered kelp spray for leaves during active growth. Each is supplied in a 1L bottle.

  • £29.99 per 1L bottle, or £69.99 for the Coastal Kelp Collection of all three 1L bottles with free delivery. Product prices are fixed; any applicable delivery charge is calculated from your postcode before payment.

  • As a guide, around 2.5L of kelp biostimulant covers up to 1,000m² over a season. Most domestic gardens need far less. Regular, light use beats occasional heavy use.

  • Yes. They are concentrated. Do not apply undiluted unless instructed, do not increase the dose because plants look healthy, and avoid repeated heavy applications.

  • Yes, they are designed to work together. The compost builds the soil, the kelp range supports plants once they are in the ground.

  • The kelp-derived ingredients used in our products come from cultivated kelp rather than seaweed stripped from local shores.

  • Kelp can be cultivated without agricultural land or freshwater irrigation. As it grows, it takes up dissolved nutrients from the water, while the farmed fronds and growing structures can provide habitat and shelter for marine organisms. The results depend on the location and management of each farm, but responsible kelp cultivation can combine useful production with positive ecological functions.

  • Each individual kelp product is supplied in a 1L bottle. Dilution and application instructions are shown on the relevant product page and product label.

  • No. Kelp products are designed to complement appropriate soil, watering, feeding and plant care. They should not be treated as a substitute for everything else a plant requires.
